Powburn Show
Saturday, 5th August 2023
Thomas Gibson of Calthwaite had a wake up call when he lost the first fall against Joe Hale in opening round of the 15st World Championship at Powburn Show. Following that wobble though, he never lost a single fall. The semi final saw Thomas meet 12st and 13st champion; Jack Brown. Two back heels despatched Jack but there was still the reigning 15st champion; Graham Brocklebank to face. In the first bout of the final, Graham tried an inside click but Thomas twisted him off it to take the fall. The second bout saw Graham gain all the hold. Thomas just ‘sat in’ and when the time was right he buttocked to win. This is the second world title for Thomas this year having won the 14st at Penrith Show last month. Along with the All weights championship cup he won last year at Langholm Common Riding he can be proud to hold all three of the CWWA Heavyweight World Championship titles.
Cockermouth Show on the same day had a fantastic turnout of youngsters with eighteen in the under 10 years class and twenty in the under 12 years. Freddie Lester, a new face last week at Carlisle Wrestling Club did very well to take third place in the under 10 years. It was great to see senior wrestlers David Miller and Ben Harrison back in the ring too. A great throng of appreciative spectators encircled the wrestling ring throughout the action.
As Sunday’s Gilsland Show was cancelled there was nothing else for Thomas Gibson to do but head up to Bridge of Allan Highland Games. Fourteen wrestlers in two pools wrestled best of five for the Scottish Heavyweight Championship title and Scotsman Frazer Hirsch was beaten by that man who’s on fire - Thomas Gibson. That’s another trophy to add to the collection Thomas!
