Jack Brown continued his recent domination of the 12 stones Championship with another win last Saturday at the Cumberland Show. He has now won four of the last five championships held at that particular weight. Although the entry for the Championship was disappointing, among an otherwise packed afternoon`s wrestling programme, it was by no means an easy ride for Jack. After getting over the first hurdle of weighing-in, he was drawn against the other favourite, Andrew Carlile, in the first round. After a bruising first hold, which ended in a dog fall and Jack nursing a sore head after an awkward landing, he brought his deadly hipes, inside and outside, into play to carve his way to the final. Against Matthew Lamont of Rothbury he continued with the same strategy to retain the title and receive the gleaming trophy from the Show Presidents, Mr & Mrs Wilson.
Matty Hodgson will remember last weekend with some pride reaching no fewer than eight finals, winning six of them. Three wins in the various Under 18 classes were supplemented by wins in the 14 stones at the Cumberland Show and the next day in the 14 stones and the All Weights at Corbridge. For his double win at the Cumberland Show, including defeating the new champion, he was the worthy winner of the Guinness Trophy for the most meritorious performance.
At the Cumberland Show the junior wrestlers from the clubs at Carlisle, Kendal and Rothbury, had kept the large crowd well entertained. Bobby Stewart and Aaron Younger were both notable in continuing their fine early season form. The senior classes had numbers swelled by entries of a number of novices from the ringside. While they acquitted themselves well experience inevitably came to the fore in the end.
The Chris Walton Memorial Trophy, normally wrestled for at the Haltwhistle Carnival, was brought to the Cumberland Show this year and now stands proudly in the possession of Tom Evans of Wreay.
After a hectic weekend there is now a pause in the wrestling season until it resumes at Skelton Show in early July when we look forward to more of the same entertaining fare
