Northumberland County Show

The children’s classes leading up to the 12 stones world championship at Northumberland County Show gave a great showcase of Cumberland & Westmorland wrestling. It was evident that CWWA coaches had been passing on their skills through the winter. The under 10 years saw some great performances from Sophie Armstrong, Frankie (buttock, buttock, buttock) Davidson and Oscar Story. Bobby Stewart comfortably won the Under 12 years and though defeated in the first round of the Under 15 years, gave Jack Whiteford a good wrestle.

It was Youngers all the way in the next two classes; George Younger beating George Peacock in the U15 years final and Aaron Younger beating Vinnie Davidson in the final of the Under 18 years. The female events were dominated by strong wrestler, Grace Hodgson from Kendal Academy winning the Under 15 years, 10st and AW classes. Tom Harrington was proud to see Abbie Whiteford using chips he’d taught - following up with an inside click when the back heel wasn’t enough.

The 12 stones championship had a small entry of six but the three wrestlers reaching the semi final, John Harrington, Andrew Carlile and Jack Brown were all current world champions. John Harrington eliminated Andrew Carlile to reach the final but the middle fall saw a tremendous swinging hipe from Andrew. A good final persued with Jack taking the first fall - lifting John high, dropping and back heeling. John fought back with a brilliant right leg outside stroke for the second fall - the final was going all the way! Jack’s tall frame lifted John up high again and there was no escape as he dropped him and followed up the the back heel once more. This is the fifth time Jack Brown of Haydon Bridge has held the 12st title. This win takes his world championship tally to nineteen. Jack went on to do the double, beating John again in the 13½st class.

The All weights saw some new faces and provided some entertaining bouts - but no one could match All weights world champion Thomas Gibson. His swinging hipe was a great finale to the Northumberland County Show.
